Areas the MV Cannon visit each year provide the best seasonal fishing available:

Run-Off (March to June)
From March to June Cannon focusses on the west coast of the NT between Darwin and Port Keats concentrating on the Moyle and Little Moyle Rivers, Anson Bay, Cape Scott, Cape Ford, Highland Bay Catfish Creek and a few highly productive “secret spots”.

This is prime barra country where you can expect excellent numbers and the chance at some trophy specimens. There’s a heap of other species to target both in the rivers and creeks and excellent fishing for pelagic and reef species around the Perron Islands and numerous bays and capes.

Dry Season (July to September)

The dry season is spent in the East Kimberley where you’ll witness seriously spectacular landscapes and awesome barra fishing in the rivers and creeks as well as metre long leaping queenfish and brutal giant trevally offshore.

It’s a brilliant experience that everyone needs to do once in a lifetime and if you’re lucky, a whole lot more.

Trips are designed to be purely fishing focussed or involve some of the other great experiences the Kimberley have to offer. Spectacular waterfalls, swimming holes and sacred art sites can be mixed into the itinerary.

You can write your own itinerary if you lock in all 8 spots.

King George River will provide great opportunities to chase barra, jack and fingermark around rock bars that create eddies and ambush points to smash your lures.

Mitchell River is one of our favourites across the whole Kimberley. There are awesome rock bars that the Kimberley is famous for plus sunken timber and bank slides you’d expect in the NT.

The Mitchell never disappoints when your mothership can put you in the right place at the right time and you are under the guidance of a seasoned professional.

The pelagic and reef fishing is world class so you are going to have a great overall experience.

Build-Up (October and November)

Van Dieman’s Gulf east of Darwin and some excellent rivers east of the Mini Mini System are where the last couple of months of the year are spent targeting big barra, threadfin and plenty of other estuary species including some very big golden snapper.

The mangrove systems, snake drains, sunken snags and bank slides here are legendary for big barra. Threadfin can be seen terrorising jelly prawns as low tide approaches and there are some big black jewfish that frequently show up.

Deserves its reputation as a barra hot spot.
