Bamurru Plains is situated on Swim Creek Station at the mouth of the NT’s mighty Mary River.

There are a total of 236 species of birds that frequent the surrounding wetlands which are critical breeding grounds for literally thousands of magpie geese and a stunning array of other birdlife ranging from tiny rainbow bee-eaters, graceful jabiru and brolga to birds of prey such as sea eagles and kites.

The Mary River catchment is also home to the highest concentration of estuarine crocodiles in the world.

The emphasis of any stay at Bamurru is to expose guests to one of the most significant ecosystems in Australia.

The unique seasonality of Bamurru Plains means no experience is the same. This is what makes it such a special experience.

  • Bamurru’s signature experience is an utterly exhilarating airboat safari. This is where you’ll come across the huge population of magpie geese as the clear the wetlands to make way for your fan powered vessel. Mixed amongst them will be plumed whistling duck, egrets, jabiru and brolga. The field guides will provide a hands-on demonstration of the many uses of the flora amongst the wetlands. They will also keep their eye out for saltwater crocodiles swimming amongst the grasses of the floodplains.
  • Birding – The significance of the property comes in the variety of habitat which includes paperbark swamps, black soil flood plains, savannah woodland, river mangroves and coastal beaches support an extraordinary diversity of birdlife. Even during the dry season the floodplains retain large areas of water where birdlife congregates in numbers rarely seen elsewhere in Australia.
  • You can also enjoy a river cruise on Sampan Creek which is part of the Mary River System and forms the western boundary of Swim Creek Station. During the dry season (June to October) crocodiles will regulate their body temperatures by basking on the banks in the sunlight. This is when you’ll get a real appreciation for the density of the crocodile population in the area. Relax in the shade provided by this canopy covered cruise enjoying canapes and a cold drink as the sun starts to fade.
  • With the recession of water from much of the flood plain during the dry season, these areas become accessible to 4X4 vehicles and a journey out with one of the field guides will provide an insight into this fragile yet important environment. The covered yet open sided vehicles provide excellent viewing platforms where in addition to the extraordinary birdlife and estuarine crocodiles you can expect to see wild horses, buffalo, wallabies and much more. If you’d prefer to enjoy this experience on foot, this can also be organised.
  • There’s also the chance to do as little as you want. Chill out around the pool enjoying an occasional dip, grab a book and find a secluded corner or just soak up the amazing surrounds from the luxury that is Bamurru Plains.
  • We can organise a fishing expedition for the fabled barramundi on the Mary River or nearby Corroboree Billabong with an external guide at an extra cost, if you’d like to consider this as an extra activity.
